Federal Work Study provides part-time jobs for undergraduate and graduate students who are enrolled at least half-time and have financial need, allowing them to earn money to help pay education expenses. If you accept a work-study allocation, you will be responsible for obtaining a work-study job (most are on campus and pay by the hour).
Priority is given to students who demonstrate financial need and meet WSU's December 1st priority date for completing the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). You must indicate on your FAFSA that you are interested in work study as part of your financial aid. If you were not offered work study in your financial aid offer and are interested, contact the Office of Financial Aid in 203 Jardine Hall or at finaid@wichita.edu.
Work study provides income that does not count in the assessment of a student's financial need the following year. Additionally, you gain valuable employment experience and networking opportunities. On-campus work-study jobs will also never require you to work while you are scheduled for class.
How do I accept my work study offer?
If you would like to accept your work study offer, accept it via your myWSU account under the myFinances tab. Next, you must obtain a work study job.
View and apply for available work study positions on the WSU Shocker Career Accelerator Services website at wichita.edu/handshake. Additional information about Handshake is available at https://www.wichita.edu/student_life/careerdevelopment/handshake.php.
Be sure to notify potential on-campus supervisors you are eligible for work study on your employment applications. Once you obtain a position and begin working, you will receive your work study through a paycheck, based on the hours worked and your rate of pay.
Can my work study offer apply directly toward my tuition bill before I earn the funds?
No. Work study simply subsidizes your earnings at your job and is not directly applied to assist with your tuition bill. You will receive a paycheck just as you would at any job. If you owe money for your tuition, however, you may consider using your work study earnings toward payments on your tuition.
Do I have to accept my work study? Can I get loans instead?
It may be possible to replace your work study offer with additional loans if you have not already been awarded the maximum loan amount for your status and grade level. To make a request to revise or change your aid offer, complete the Financial Aid Revision Request through your myWSU portal. For instructions on how to complete this request, click here.
