If you, your parents, and/or your spouse are a victim of tax-related identity theft, access to your tax information is restricted and the entire resolution process with the IRS can take up to a year or more. Please visit https://www.irs.gov/identity-theft-central for more information.
In some cases, victims of IRS-related identity theft may not be able to use the FAFSA's IRS Data Retrieval Tool (DRT) or request a Tax Return Transcript from the IRS. However, the Office of Financial Aid suggests that you still try to use those methods first to verify your income. If those methods do not work, please utilize the alternative method below. Note: Beginning with 2024-2025 FAFSA award year, all individuals on the FAFSA will be required to use the IRS Direct Data Exchange to share tax information or confirm non-filing status.
You may call the Identity Protection Specialized Unit (IPSU) toll free number at 1-800-908-4490. After the IPSU authenticates your identity, you can request that the IRS mail you an alternate paper tax return transcript, known as the "Tax Return DataBase View" transcript (TRDBV).
Once you receive the TRDBV by mail, submit a copy to Wichita State University’s Office of Financial Aid as well as a signed and dated letter indicating that you were a victim of IRS tax-related identity theft and that the IRS has been made aware of the tax-related identity theft.
If you attempted but are unable to obtain a TRDBV, you may submit another official IRS transcript, other equivalent document provided by the IRS, or your signed tax return with all schedules attached. The documents you submit must include all of the income and tax information required to be verified. In addition, you will still need to provide a signed and dated letter indicating that you were a victim of IRS tax-related identity theft and that the IRS has been made aware of the tax-related identity theft.
