What is the repeat policy at Wichita State University?

Body

Any course may be repeated up to three (3) times while having the two (2) previous attempts excluded from the GPA. Only the most recent grade will be calculated into your grade point average (GPA), but all repeated courses will be reflected on your transcript. For this policy, an audit or withdrawal does not count as an attempt. Once you graduate, you can still repeat classes to improve your GPA, but that cannot be used to amend honors as determined at the time of graduation.

If you want to take a class more than three times, the department offering the course can approve an exception. If an exception is given, only the first two grades for the course will be excluded from the GPA. All other grades received for that course will be averaged into the GPA.

First class completed at WSU/ Repeat class(es) completed at WSU
When you repeat a course at WSU, the most recent grade is included in the GPA and marked with an "I" notation on the transcript. The previous grade(s) in that course is marked with an "E" notation and excluded from the GPA. The previous course and grade will remain on the transcript, but are not counted in the GPA.

First class completed at WSU/ Repeat class completed at another college
Grades received in courses taken at another institution do not replace grades in courses taken at WSU. If you repeat a course at another institution after taking the class at WSU, the grades are averaged into your GPA. The WSU grade will be marked with an "A" on your transcript and the transfer class will have an “I” notation.

First class completed at another college/ Repeat class completed at WSU
If you repeat a course at WSU that you attempted at another college and the transfer course is equivalent to the WSU course, the most recent grade is included in the GPA and marked with an “I” notation on the transcript. The previous grade in that course is marked with an “E” notation and excluded from the GPA. The previous course and grade will remain on the transcript, but are not counted in the GPA. Repeating a class at WSU will not change your grade at previous colleges.

Note: Classes repeated prior to Fall 2013 are subject to the repeat policy in effect during that catalog year.

Do I have to repeat my class?

Required classes
All degrees require completion of foundation classes with a grade of C- or better (some programs in Health Professions, Engineering and Education require a higher grade). If you earn less than the required grade in a foundation class or a class that is required for your major, you will need to repeat the class in order to receive a higher grade. Meeting with your academic advisor is strongly recommended to review your options.

Foundation Courses:
English 101 – English Composition I (or English 100 for non-native speakers)
English 102 – English Composition II
Communications 111 – Public Speaking
Math 111 – College Algebra or Math 131 – Contemporary Math (or higher-level math course)

Note: Certain majors will not accept Math 131, please check with your academic advisor to see which math class is required for your major.

Non-required classes
If you fail a class that is not required for your degree, you have the option of repeating the class to improve your GPA. Your academic advisor can help you decide if repeating is the best option for you.

Financial Aid
After a class has been completed with grade of D- or better, the class is only eligible for aid one additional time. This rule applies regardless of the minimum grade required by your program and regardless of whether or not you received aid for earlier enrollments in the course. The rule also applies to both WSU coursework and transfer coursework.

For further questions regarding how repeating classes can affect financial aid, contact the Office of Financial Aid at 316-978-3430 or finaid@wichita.edu.
