Are students required to live on campus?

All first-year students, including transfer students, undergraduate international students and Intensive English students, must live on campus during your first two semesters at Wichita State University unless you qualify for an exemption (see below).

Housing options
WSU offers two unique housing communities, Shocker Hall and The Flats at WSU. Both are designed to foster academic success, personal growth, quick access to classes, campus activities, and athletic events.

Shocker Hall houses over 750 students. It is located in the center of campus and offers five room styles: single, traditional double, shared, two room single, triple, and quad. There are kitchens, lounges, and laundry rooms on each floor. Shocker Dining Hall and the GroundHouse coffee shop are attached to provide convenient food options to residents.

The Flats is a fully furnished apartment complex on the Innovation Campus located in the heart of campus. There are multiple floor plans to choose from with 1, 2, 3 or 4 bedroom layouts to fit your lifestyle. These units have all-inclusive pricing, with all utilities and reserved parking included. All units include a complete kitchen, full-size washer and dryer, full-size beds plus a desk and nightstand, walk-in closets, flat screen TV, WiFi, private bathrooms and much more. The complex is open to students, faculty, staff, employees of Innovation Campus partner companies and anyone who wants easy access to everything WSU has to offer.

The Suites is a is a 230-bed residence hall, located right next to The Flats Apartments. The building features primarily 2 bedroom suites, with some 1 bedroom and 4 bedroom units throughout the building. Each suite contains a private bathroom, a kitchenette area, washer & dryer, and common living room. The Suites will be open to both returners and new residents. First-year students will be grouped together on particular floors.

Housing exemption policy
Students who meet one of the following qualifications can be exempt from the housing requirement. If you believe you qualify for one of these exceptions, please submit the Housing Exemption Form located in your myWSU portal > Home tab > Campus Housing (Student Tools box).

  • Live in the greater Sedgwick County area (counties include: Sedgwick, Butler, Harvey, Cowley, Harper, Kingman, Reno, and Sumner) with a parent, legal guardian, aunt/uncle, or grandparent
  • 21 years of age or older OR earned 24 or more credit hours
  • Married
  • Live in Greek housing
  • Taking less than 12 credit hours per semester

Off-campus housing options
Wichita is a very large city with many options for apartments and rental properties. Wichita State does not have any special affiliations or recommendations for off-campus housing.
