Overview 

The Shocker Career Accelerator (SCA) at Wichita State University supports students in exploring careers, developing professional skills, obtaining internships and applied learning experiences, and preparing for employment after graduation. The office provides career coaching, career exploration tools, job and internship resources, employer connections, and professional development opportunities.  

Services Available 

Career Coaching 

• Students can meet with a Career Coach for personalized guidance related to: 

• Career exploration and decision-making 

• Connecting interests, strengths, skills, majors, and career possibilities 

• Developing career goals and actionable next steps 

• Resume and cover letter development 

• Interview preparation and practice 

• Job and internship search strategies 

• Professional networking and workplace communication 

• Preparing for internships, applied learning, and employment 

 

Appointments may be available in person or virtually.  

When Should I Meet With a Career Coach? 

Students are encouraged to connect with the Shocker Career Accelerator at any stage of their college experience. You do not need to be graduating or actively looking for a job to meet with a Career Coach. 

Consider making an appointment if you: 

• Are unsure what career you want to pursue  

• Are considering changing your major or career direction  

• Want to explore careers related to your major  

• Want to identify and communicate your strengths and skills  

• Are looking for an internship or applied learning experience  

• Want to build or receive feedback on a resume, cover letter, or LinkedIn profile  

• Want to practice for an interview  

• Are preparing for a career fair or networking event  

• Are approaching graduation and preparing for your job search 

Career Exploration Tools 

The Shocker Career Accelerator provides access to several resources that help students identify interests, career pathways, and employment opportunities.  

PathwayU - PathwayU 

PathwayU is a career exploration platform that helps students better understand their interests, values, personality, and workplace preferences and connect those insights to potential career pathways, occupations, and opportunities. 

• Explore careers aligned with their interests and strengths 

• Learn about career pathways 

• Develop informed educational and career plans 

Shocker Central – Shocker Central 

Shocker Central is Wichita State's career management platform where students can: 

• Search for on-campus jobs, internships, and employment opportunities  

• Explore and apply for experiential learning opportunities  

• Register for career fairs, employer events, and workshops  

• Connect with employers  

• Access career development resources  

• Schedule appointments with Career Coaches 

What Can I Do With This Major? – What Can I Do With This Major 
This resource helps students explore potential career paths, industries, occupations, and opportunities related to their major. Students can use it to: 

• Explore career options related to their major  

• Learn about common career paths and industries  

• Identify potential employers and job titles  

• Explore Professional Associations and related groups  

• Connect their academic interests with potential career goals  

Students who are unsure which career paths are a good fit can also meet with a Career Coach to discuss their options and identify next steps. 

Kansas Micro-Internships 

Micro-Internships are short-term, paid professional assignments that provide students with real-world work experience and skill development opportunities. Students can explore micro-internships at https://info.parkerdewey.com/student/wichita.  

Applied Learning Opportunities 

The Shocker Career Accelerator promotes applied learning experiences that help students gain practical experience while completing their education. Students can participate in internships, employer-sponsored projects, and other experiential learning opportunities designed to strengthen career readiness.  

Applied learning gives students opportunities to use knowledge and skills from the classroom in real-world settings. Opportunities may include internships, micro-internships, employer-sponsored projects, practicums, and other experiential learning experiences. 

Career Resources :

Career Closet 

The SCA Career Closet, located in the basement of the Shocker Success Center, provides professional clothing and accessories to help students prepare for interviews, career fairs, internships, and other professional settings for free! 

Professional Photo Booth 

Students can use the SCA Professional Photo Booth to take a professional headshot for use on LinkedIn, professional profiles, and other career-related materials. No appointment is required to access the booth! The booth is open when our office is open (Monday through Friday, 8:00 am to 5:00 pm.) 

Resume Templates and Guides 

Students can access resume templates, examples, and our Career Ready Guide to help develop and strengthen their resumes and other professional application materials. 

Shocker Central Resource Library 

The Shocker Central Resource Library provides students with career development resources, including resume and cover letter materials, interview preparation resources, job-search tools, and other helpful guides. 

SCA Student SharePoint Site 

The SCA student SharePoint site provides access to additional career resources, templates, guides, and information to support students throughout their career development. 

Employer Engagement 

The office connects students with employers through: 

• Career fairs 

• Networking events 

• Internship opportunities 

• Employment opportunities 

• Employer recruiting activities
