Can I Take WSU Classes While I'm Still in High School?

High school sophomores, juniors, and seniors can enroll in WSU courses and earn college credit before graduating from high school. These opportunities are available through three enrollment options:

• Dual Enrollment allows you to earn college credit by taking designated courses on campus at WSU. These courses are taught by WSU faculty members and classmates are primarily other high school students. Cost $149 per course (not including books).
• High School Guest allows you to take regularly scheduled on-campus courses (if pre-requisites are met) alongside college students at either the main, West or Old Town campuses. Costs full WSU tuition and fees.
• Concurrent Enrollment allows you to take college-level courses in your high school, taught by your high school teachers who are approved by Wichita State faculty to teach those courses. This is the easiest way to earn college credit and allows you to do it alongside your classmates in high school. Cost $149 per course.

A one-time, non-refundable $25 application fee is also required. Returning high school students who have already paid this fee will not need to pay it again.

Dual Enrollment

Dual Enrollment allows you to take an approved, reduced-rate WSU course taught by a WSU faculty member. You will take the class alongside current WSU students.

Eligibility:

• Be a high school sophomore, junior or senior—or a freshman with a gifted IEP.
• Have at least a 2.75 cumulative high school GPA.
• Maintain at least a 2.0 college GPA to participate in future semesters.
• Receive approval from a high school official and a parent or guardian.
• Meet any prerequisites required for the course.

Application requirements:

1. Complete the Early College Portal application.
2. Select your courses through the Early College Portal.
3. Pay the one-time, non-refundable $25 application fee.
4. Submit a high school transcript that includes your most recently completed semester.
5. Complete the required parent or guardian consent.

Important: You must select your courses through the Early College Portal. Do not use WSU’s regular Schedule of Courses. If you register for a course on your own, you may be charged full tuition and fees instead of the reduced Dual Enrollment rate.

High School Guest

If the course you want is not offered through Dual Enrollment, you may be able to take it as a High School Guest student. You must meet all course prerequisites and will pay full WSU tuition and fees.

Eligibility:

• Be a high school sophomore, junior or senior, or a freshman with a gifted IEP.
• Have at least a 2.75 cumulative high school GPA.
• Maintain at least a 2.0 college GPA if you have previously completed college coursework.
• Meet all prerequisites for the course you want to take.

Application requirements:

1. Apply at wichita.edu/apply.
2. Select the Undergraduate Non-Degree application.
3. Choose the High School Guest option.
4. Pay the one-time, non-refundable $25 application fee.
5. Ask your high school to send WSU an official transcript that includes your most recently completed semester.

The High School Guest application deadline is generally about one week before the first day of classes. Check wichita.edu/hsguest for current dates and information.

Concurrent Enrollment

Concurrent Enrollment allows you to earn WSU credit for an approved course taught at your high school by one of your high school teachers.

Eligibility:

• Be enrolled in an approved Concurrent Enrollment course at your high school.
• Be a high school sophomore, junior or senior—or a freshman with a gifted IEP.
• Have at least a 2.75 cumulative high school GPA.
• Have at least a 2.0 cumulative WSU GPA if you have previously taken WSU courses.
• Receive approval from a high school official and a parent or guardian.
• Meet any additional prerequisites for the course.

Your high school may have additional eligibility requirements.

Application requirements:

Your teacher or WSU representative will provide the application and enrollment instructions for your school. If you are unsure whether one of your classes offers WSU credit, ask your teacher or check out wichita.edu/concurrent.

Additional information

• High school students may take up to six credit hours each semester. Permission from the Office of Admissions is required to take more than six hours.
• Admission does not guarantee enrollment in a specific course. You must meet all course prerequisites and receive any required departmental approval.
• Students who do not meet the standard eligibility requirements may request an exception by submitting the High School Guest Exception Form.
• Taking WSU classes in high school does not guarantee degree-bound admission after graduation. You must complete a separate freshman application if you want to attend WSU after high school.

International and foreign exchange students

If you're a student in the United States as part of a foreign exchange program and want to participate in dual enrollment, you'll get admitted through the Office of International Admissions.
