Do I have to apply to your English as a Second Language (ESL) program?

Whether or not you must apply for the Wichita State University ESL program is based on your English proficiency and/or test scores.

Undergraduate
If you have met the Undergraduate English Requirement, you do not need to apply to Intensive English. If you have not met the English requirement by the time you arrive in Wichita, we will test your English before you begin classes. If you pass our English test, you will begin full-time study in your academic major. If you fail, you will be required to study in Intensive English.

Graduate
If you have met the graduate English requirement, you do not need to apply to Intensive English. However, if you have not met the English Requirement at the time you apply for graduate admission, you could apply to Intensive English as well.

The Graduate School will not issue an I-20 until one of the following criteria is complete:

  • You submit required TOEFL or IELTS Score or PTE score (and meet all other admission requirements)

    OR

  • You apply to Intensive English (and meet all other admission requirements)

To apply to Intensive English, please visit our website at wichita.edu/ieapply.

How long will I be in the ESL program?
The length of the program varies from student-to-student. How long you are in the program depends on

  1. Your level of English proficiency when you begin your studies
  2. How you adapt to language learning
  3. How much effort you put into your studies, and
  4. Your desired level of English proficiency.
