Do I have to submit a tax return for financial aid verification if I did not need to file taxes?

Dependent students
Dependent students who were not required to file taxes will not need to submit a tax return. It may appear in the Unsatisfied Requirements section of your Financial Aid Dashboard if you indicated on your FAFSA or verification worksheet that you did or will file taxes.

Note: You may be required to submit copies of your w2s or wage & income transcript if you had earned income but did not earn enough to be required to file taxes.

Independent students and parents (of dependent students)
Independent students and parents of dependent students who were not required to file a tax return will need to submit an IRS Verification of Non-filing letter which shows the IRS has no record of a filed Form 1040 for the tax year requested. Non-tax filers can request this letter from the IRS free of charge by following the steps below. Additionally, if you, your parents, or your spouse did not file taxes but had earned income, you will need to submit copies of w2s or wage and income transcripts.
