You may be able to file a Professional Judgment request with our office. To obtain the form, please make an appointment with the Office of Financial Aid at wichita.edu/finaidappt and a financial aid advisor will review your circumstances. Be aware that you will be required to provide detailed information and documentation.
What is a Professional Judgment?
The federal formula that determines aid eligibility is the same for all applicants. However, if your family has experienced any unusual family or financial circumstances or expenses that you believe are not reflected in the determination of your aid eligibility, then you should contact one of our representatives in the Office of Financial Aid.
Unusual circumstances include, but are not limited to, death, separation/divorce, loss of job, change in income, paid excessive medical expenses, private elementary/secondary tuition charges, and dependent care and may warrant a review and subsequent adjustment in the formula that determines your federal aid eligibility. You will required to provide documentation to support any adjustments you may be seeking.
Not all situations are considered a special circumstance. The following are situations that would not be considered a special circumstance: Your parents do not want to provide their information on your FAFSA; or Your parents refuse to contribute to your college expenses; or Your parents do not claim you as a dependent on their income taxes; or You do not live with your parents.
How will I know the outcome of my Special Circumstances request?
Students will be notified of the appeal decision either by email or paper communication. Students should allow up to 3 weeks for a decision once all documentation is received.
