Can I take classes without getting a grade (audit courses)?

Students are permitted to attend credit courses on a noncredit basis, with appropriate approval, under an auditor classification.

Students who are currently enrolled in a course for credit but want to change that to audit need to visit the Registration window in-person on the 1st floor of Jardine Hall.

Enrollment/Fees
To be enrolled as auditors, students must enroll in the same manner and pay the same fees as for-credit courses at the university.

Class Participation
Auditors may participate fully in the class and expect instructor evaluation of their work. Auditors are expected to attend class regularly.

Transcript/Grades
The audited course will appear on the transcript with the grade notation of Au. Courses taken on an audit basis may be repeated for credit and, if repeated, may be used to fulfill degree requirements if the repeated grade is acceptable. Use of the audit basis for a course must be declared at the time of enrollment. Audited courses are not eligible for financial aid.

Kansas Residents 60 and Older Auditors
In accordance with the Kansas Board of Regents policy, students who are at least 60 years of age and a resident of Kansas may audit (no-credit) regular lecture or certain group activity courses – when there is space available and for which they meet the prerequisites – without payment of tuition and student fees, campus infrastructure and support fees, and technology and transportation fees. However, Kansas residents 60 and older auditors must pay for any applicable workshop fees and lab/special course fees. Prerequisites include admission to graduate school for graduate courses, and program admission for courses in which program admission is required of all students.

To receive the tuition waiver, you will need to follow these guidelines:

  • Apply to the University before registering (this only needs to be done once)
  • Be at least 60 years of age
  • Be a resident of Kansas
  • Present a Medicare card or driver's license to validate age
  • Register in-person at Jardine Hall, WSU South or WSU West. Registration begins on the designated dates or later.
  • Meet any required course prerequisites

Kansas residents 60 and older who wish to receive college credit must pay full fees and register following the traditional steps for admission and registration.

Visit wichita.edu/admissions and wichita.edu/registration to learn more about the traditional admission and registration processes.

For more information on the admission process for Kansas residents 60 and older auditors, contact the Office of Admissions at admissions@wichita.edu.
